Sport Coat vs. Blazer: What Is the Difference and Which Should You Buy?

Designer sport coats and blazers hanging in the Label Legends showroom

A blazer is a solid-colored jacket, traditionally navy, often with metal or contrasting buttons, worn with odd trousers. A sport coat is a more casual jacket in a patterned or textured fabric like tweed, herringbone or check. A suit jacket is cut from the same cloth as matching trousers and is not meant to be worn on its own.

People use the three words interchangeably, and in a store that is fine. But knowing the difference helps you buy the right jacket for the life you actually lead.

The suit jacket: one half of a pair

Start here, because it is the easiest to define. A suit jacket is made from the same fabric as its trousers. It is usually a smooth worsted wool in a solid or subtle pattern, with a structured shoulder and matching buttons.

Can you wear a suit jacket with jeans? People do. It rarely looks right, because smooth suiting fabric looks like what it is: half of a suit that lost its other half. Separates were designed to be worn as separates. A suit jacket was not.

The blazer: solid, sharp, and versatile

The classic blazer is navy wool, with brass, silver, horn or contrasting buttons. Today you will also see blazers in black, charcoal, camel and other solid colors, and in fabrics like hopsack or flannel.

What makes it a blazer is that it is solid and meant to be worn with trousers that do not match. Grey flannels, khakis, chinos, even dark denim. It sits in the middle of the formality scale: dressier than a sport coat, a step less formal than a suit.

A navy blazer is the most versatile jacket a man can own. It works at a business-casual office, a dinner out, a holiday party, a funeral when you do not own a dark suit, and almost anywhere in between.

The sport coat: texture and pattern

The sport coat comes from country clothing. Historically it was the jacket worn for shooting, riding and other outdoor sport, which is where the name comes from. That heritage shows in the fabrics: tweed, herringbone, houndstooth, windowpane check, corduroy, and heavier, textured wools.

Sport coats are often a little softer in construction than a suit jacket, with patch pockets and a more relaxed shoulder. They are the most casual of the three, and the most fun. A good tweed sport coat over a sweater with flannels or dark jeans is one of the best things a man can wear from October through March.

The quick comparison

Fabric: suit jacket in smooth worsted that matches its trousers; blazer in solid wool such as serge, hopsack or flannel; sport coat in textured or patterned cloth like tweed, herringbone or check.

Buttons: suit jackets have matching buttons; blazers often have metal or contrasting buttons; sport coats usually have horn, leather or matching buttons.

Worn with: suit jacket only with its matching trousers; blazer and sport coat with odd trousers.

Formality: suit jacket is most formal, blazer is in the middle, sport coat is most casual.

Which one should you buy first?

For most men, the first separate jacket should be a navy blazer. It pairs with almost every trouser color you already own and covers the widest range of occasions.

The second should be a sport coat in a mid-weight textured fabric. Grey herringbone or a brown tweed are the safest starting points, because they work with navy, grey, tan and denim.

After that, it comes down to how you live. If your work is mostly business casual, two or three sport coats in different patterns will get more wear than another suit. If you are in a suit most days, one strong navy blazer for weekends may be all you need.

Dressing for a Michigan year

Michigan's seasons make the case for owning more than one jacket.

Fall and winter: this is sport coat season. Tweed and flannel actually keep you warm, and they look right with sweaters, boots and heavier trousers. Layer a topcoat over the top when the wind comes across the parking lot. Our Michigan winter coat guide covers that part.

Spring: a navy blazer in a lighter wool or hopsack, with grey trousers or chinos.

Summer: lighter, more open weaves, and fabrics like linen or cotton blends, often unlined or half-lined to stay cool.

Five ways to wear a navy blazer

If you buy one jacket from this article, here is how to get a full year out of it.

  1. The office default: navy blazer, light blue oxford shirt, grey wool trousers, brown leather shoes. It works for nearly any business-casual workplace.
  2. The dinner jacket: navy blazer, white dress shirt, charcoal trousers, black or dark brown shoes. Add a pocket square if the restaurant has tablecloths.
  3. The weekend version: navy blazer over a grey crewneck sweater, dark jeans, suede shoes or boots.
  4. The summer cookout: navy blazer in a lighter weave, open-collar shirt, khaki or stone chinos, loafers.
  5. The holiday party: navy blazer, crisp shirt, a knit or patterned tie, and dark trousers. It reads dressed up without looking like you came straight from work.

A sport coat follows the same logic, just one notch more relaxed. Swap the dress shirt for an oxford or a fine-gauge knit, and lean into the texture.

How a sport coat or blazer should fit

The fit rules are the same as a suit jacket. Shoulders that end at your shoulder bone, a collar that lies flat, a front that buttons without pulling, and about half an inch of shirt cuff showing. Sport coats are often cut with slightly more room to layer a sweater underneath, so try one on over what you will actually wear with it. The full checklist is in How a Suit Should Fit.

Building the collection without paying full price

Separate jackets add up fast at full retail, and they are one of the best categories to buy at a discount. A well made blazer or sport coat lasts for years, so you are paying for the garment, not the season.

Our suits and sport coats section carries both, brand new with tags from twenty independent U.S. retailers and hand-selected luxury consignment, at up to 70% off retail. Labels like Hugo Boss, Ermenegildo Zegna, Burberry and Peter Millar move through regularly, in sizes Small through XXXL.

Common Questions

What is the difference between a sport coat and a blazer?

A blazer is a solid-colored jacket, traditionally navy, often with metal or contrasting buttons. A sport coat is more casual and comes in patterned or textured fabrics like tweed, herringbone or check. Both are worn with non-matching trousers.

Can I wear a suit jacket as a blazer?

It is usually not ideal. Suit jackets are cut from smooth suiting fabric meant to match their trousers, so they tend to look out of place with jeans or chinos.

Which should I buy first, a blazer or a sport coat?

For most men, a navy blazer comes first because it works with the widest range of trousers and occasions. A grey herringbone or brown tweed sport coat is a strong second.

Can you wear a sport coat with jeans?

Yes. A textured sport coat with dark, well fitting jeans is a classic smart-casual look, especially with a sweater or an oxford shirt.
