Thinking About Consigning? Here Is How It Works

Thinking About Consigning? Here Is How It Works

There is a closet in a lot of houses around here with two or three thousand dollars hanging in it that nobody has touched in four years. Suits from a job you left. A coat that stopped fitting somewhere around the second lockdown. The Zegna you bought for a wedding in 2019 and wore exactly once. It is not doing anything in there.

We believe in the K.I.S.S. theory when it comes to consignment. Keep It Super Simple. Here is what simple actually looks like.

It starts with a phone call. Call Russ or Steven at (248) 591-4554 and tell us what you have, roughly how many pieces, which labels, what kind of condition. We will tell you on that call whether it is a fit for our floor and exactly what the terms are. One call. No forms to download, no portal to log into, no fees that turn up later.

We are selective, and it is fairer to say that up front than to waste your trip. Pieces are hand-selected for condition and for label, which means designer menswear that still looks the part. Clean, current, nothing waiting on a repair. We are a men's luxury store, so that is the lane we stay in. If you are not certain whether what you have qualifies, that is exactly what the phone call is for.

It is also worth knowing what we do not do. We do not buy clothing from the public outright. That catches people off guard if they have dealt with a buy-sell-trade shop before, where you hand over a bag and walk out with cash worth a fraction of what was in it. Consignment works differently. You still own the piece while it sits with us, and it gets priced to sell for something close to what it is actually worth rather than flipped fast for a margin.

Your pieces are not sitting in a back room waiting for luck. They hang in a five thousand square foot showroom on Orchard Lake Road where men walk in specifically looking for designer labels, and they go out to thousands of listings in our eBay store where buyers across the country are searching by brand and by size. A sport coat that would hang for months in a general consignment shop tends to find its buyer here, because the right buyer is already standing in the room.

Pricing is the part most people get wrong on their own. Price it too high and it hangs until you give up on it. Price it too low and you have handed away money that was sitting in your closet. We have been pricing menswear since 2009 and we know what a Peter Millar quarter-zip and a Burberry topcoat each actually move for in this market. Your pieces get priced, presented and sold by people who know the labels.

If you have been meaning to deal with that closet, the whole thing starts with one conversation. Call Russ or Steven at (248) 591-4554, or stop by 28801 Orchard Lake Road in Farmington Hills, between 12 and 13 Mile, Monday through Saturday, noon to six.
